Engineering aboard the U.S.S. Defiant is the control centre for one of the most powerful ships in Starfleet and, indeed the Alpha Quadrant. The Defiant, built originally as a warship to counter the Borg threat, is massively overpowered for a ship of its size. Until it is redesigned, it practically tears itself apart every time it is tested. Luckily however, the problems are eventually ironed out.

Engineering is a particularly important area aboard the Defiant because, if the bridge has been disabled due to damaged from a direct attack, Main Engineering may be used as an emergency bridge. In the combat situations the Defiant is constructed to deal with, damage is more likely to occur than on starships conducting more peacuful missions, despite the ship's extensive defensive systems.

Main Engineering is at the rear of the area of the Defiant rigged for habitation by life forms; it is located just forward of the inpulse engines. From the bridge, entry to the engine room is through the transport room and along a corridor on the second level., then down a steep companionway to the main level. Entry from living quarters is through a doorway on the main level.

Engineering is a roughly square room that comprises one main area, half of which is slightly raised. The two levels are connected by a series of steps. At the end of the room opposite the warp core, a galleried mezzanine provides additional engineering work stations and a view over the whole area.

As with most engineering areas of the late 24th century, the main feature of the Defiant's engineering is its imposing warp core. This is a tall, cylindrical structure at the aft of Main Engineering compartment. Plasma conduits run off the core at an angle on each side, on their way to the warp engines. The core is primarly a radioactive blue with lighter blue horizontal blue lines moving downward through it.

A red saftey railing seperates the warp core from the rest of the chamber; on each side is a red rectangular panel with horizontal red lines moving up. This panel is nearly as tall as the warp core itself. The side walls of the room are covered with displays and access panels; one display features a schematic of the Defiant showing energy flow and other useful information.

In the centre of the room is a freestanding multipurpose monitor and control table. It is square, and has a short, thick, round device on top. This work station can control communications as well as structural integrity. and other ship's functions. When required, this station can be reconfigured to allow bridge systems to run from Engineering, using the standard control layout or any other layout desired.
