sickbay

the surgical and recovery ward is the heart of sickbay

The sickbay is one of the most important facilities aboard the Enterprise. Because Constitution Class ships are frequently out of contact with Federation planets and even starbases for long periods of time, it is essential that onboard medical research facilities are capable of dealing with the countless diseases and unusual conditions which the crew will inevitably encounter during the ship's mission of deep space exploration.

Research Function

What is more, on of the Enterprise's functions is to serve as a mobile hospital and medical reseaarch lab. The ship is often sent on missions to deal with plagues or other medical emergencies. It also makes routine medical inspections of remote Federation colonies and outposts, and delivers urgently needed medical supplies to planet based authorities. The ship is also equipped to collect and refine various substancess which have medical applications.

The Enterprise carries a number of vital medical supplies, such as blood plasma, cordrazinem, formazine as standard. In short the Enterprise's sickbay is capable of dealing with almost any kind of medical problems.

The Enterprise's sickbay, sometimes reffered to as the dispensary, is located on deck 5 in the most protected part of the ship. For the majority of Kirk's first five year mission, sickbay is staffed by Dr McCoy and Nurse Chapel, but the Enterprise had at least 30 medical personel.

Enterprise

the surgical and recovery ward is equipped for complex procedures such as cryogenic heart surgery. a surgical support frame maintains a sterile enviroment, allowing the medical staff to work quickly and safely

The sickbay is divided into four distinct areas; a research lab, the doctor's office, an examination room and a surgical and recovery ward. The first three of these areas have doors that directly open onto the corridor. There are alert lights above each of the doors which flash in an emergency situation, but do not produce any sound. The four areas are seperated by walls with open doorways between them.

The research lab in sickbay contains one long table and a number if medical analysis devices, including an electron microscope. The table has an access terminal that is tied into the ships medical database, this allows the doctor to cross reference his findings with the vast ammount of data that has been gathered by Starfleet Medical.

The doorway from the lab leads directly into the doctor's office. Built into the the office wall that divides it from the examination room is a large cabinet with a wall of pebbled glass. Inside, one can vaguely see medical objects such as a apothecary jars, bottles and skulls. McCoy's desk has an access terminal, which he uses to perform his duties. The doctor is responsible for maintaining detailed records on the ship's crew. Everyone aboard the Enterprise is required to attend a regular physical, and the doctor is entitled to record any observations he sees fit on any aspect of a crew member's mental or physical condition. A door by the doctor's desk leads out into the corridor, and another arch leads through into the examination area.

In the main ward of sickbay there are at least three diagnostic beds. Advanced medical technology means that long stays in sickbay are rare, and it is quite common for all three beds to be empty. Each of the beds is fitted with a monitor like the one over the the main examination bed.

On the wall above each, immediately under the medical monitor, is a single white light, shaped something like a unicorn's horn. This illuminates the area for the patient, and may also alert the attending nurse that the patients need help.
